Cross-Stitch for Beginners
Everything you need to start your very first pattern — no experience, no fancy tools, no pressure. Just thread, fabric, and a quiet afternoon.

What is cross-stitch?
Cross-stitch is a form of counted embroidery where tiny X-shaped stitches are worked over a grid of evenly woven fabric. Each X fills one square on the pattern — that's it. If you can follow a grid and thread a needle, you can cross-stitch.
Your beginner supply list
- Aida cloth (14-count) — the friendliest fabric for beginners. The holes are easy to see and count.
- Embroidery hoop — a 6" wooden or plastic hoop keeps your fabric taut.
- Tapestry needle (size 24) — blunt tip so it slips between fabric threads instead of splitting them.
- Embroidery floss (DMC) — the colors listed in your pattern's key.
- Small scissors — sharp, pointed embroidery scissors for clean cuts.
- Your pattern — printed or open on a tablet. A highlighter helps you track finished rows.
How to read a pattern
Every Stitch Hiker pattern includes a color chart and a symbol chart. Each square on the grid is one stitch, and each symbol (or color) matches a DMC thread number in the key. Start from the center of the fabric and the center of the chart so your design stays centered — no measuring math required.
The stitch, step by step
- Cut a length of floss about 18". Separate out 2 strands (for 14-count Aida).
- Thread your needle. Don't knot the end — you'll anchor it under your first few stitches.
- Come up through the bottom-left hole of a square, down through the top-right. That's a half stitch (/).
- Come up through the bottom-right, down through the top-left to complete the X.
- Work a row of half stitches in one direction, then cross them all back on the return. Cleaner and faster.
Tiny habits that make a huge difference
- Keep your Xs facing the same direction. All top stitches leaning the same way = a finished piece that looks professional.
- Park your needle in an empty square when you pause — never on the design.
- Wash your hands before you stitch. Oils transfer to floss.
- Take breaks. Cross-stitch is meditative, not a race.
Picking your first pattern
Start small. A design with 3–6 colors and a compact size (think 5"× 5") is the sweet spot — big enough to feel satisfying, small enough to finish in a weekend or two. Our full pattern shop has plenty of beginner-friendly options, especially in the florals and plants categories.
Finishing your piece
When your last stitch is in, gently hand-wash the fabric in cool water with a drop of mild soap, roll it in a towel to press out moisture, and iron it face-down on a soft towel. Then frame it in the hoop you stitched it in, or pop it into a picture frame. Done. You made a thing.
